If I had a choice for a last meal, it would be veal marsala too. This movie is such a classic because they use economy of film to such an enormous degree. For example, in this scene, exposition is relayed, plots decided and, in the very act of being domestic, the film is exposing character traits. Tom, as in every other scene with food, is eating, because you never really forget being an orphan - he also gets frustrated and snaps at Sonny who shrugs it off. This is the primary reason why their combined regime didn't work. Sonny is arrogant and overconfident and Tom, who was rescued by Sonny, defers to him too much to be a real adviser (he also stands, the proverbial outsider. Tessio is intelligent while Clamenza was stalwart. And Michael maintains quiet dignity in the face of a world being planned around him. The way he hugs his brothers goodbye is also hugely important. Michael not only kisses Sonny goodbye but sinks into him with real affection. His hug with Tom is possessive but without the same fondness. His resentment of Tom is threaded so quietly through the film and is so important. Tom as the one who could leave, Tom as the voice of his father, Tom as the one who had Sonny's ear. Coppola infuses every single scene with these silent conversations, these unspoken realities, exactly like the ones that reside in real families.
Don't forget, two shot's a piece to the shinebox. You talk about vengeance. Is vengeance going to bring your son back to you? Or my boy to me. Like if Michael and Vito Corleone are your role models.
A man who dislikes the Godfather theme can never be a real man. If clemenza says the gun will be there, then that's just it. I felt like crying... I love The Godfather so much my heart aches.
